Holy Week: Day 1

Pre K

Read Luke 19:28-40- Jesus and his disciples are walking to Jerusalem. When they get outside the city he sends his disciples to go get a donkey for him. As he rides into the city people begin to lay their jackets on the road for his donkey to walk on. They do this to show how much greater he is then them. The people want Jesus to know they believe he is worthy of glory and praise. They sing out to him "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord" and "Hosanna in the highest!" Some people didn't like this because they didn't believe Jesus was king or God. Jesus tells them if these people did not worship him the rocks would cry out from the ground praises to him.

Say: Jesus is our king. He came into the world to save us. He is worthy of our praise.

Act: Let's praise God. I will play this worship song (on smart phone, radio etc.) and will lay our coats on the floor to knell on. And we will sing to the Lord.

Q: Why do you think the pharisees were mad that the people were worshipping Jesus? (Jesus was not the kind of king they were expecting. They thought the messiah would be like King David with a great army. They thought he would have a great palace like King Solomon)

Q: Why do you think Jesus was born in a manger and arrived in Jerusalem on a donkey? (Jesus' kingdom said his kingdom would come like a small and insignificant mustard seed and grow beyond on imagination, sometimes the things that appear small and typical can become very large and special).

Q: The people laid their cloaks in the road to show Jesus is worthy of honor and praise. How do we show Jesus honor and praise?

Act: Let's praise God. I will play this worship song (on smart phone, radio etc.) and will lay our coats on the floor to knell on. And we will sing to the Lord.

Elementary

Read Luke 19:28-40:

After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They replied, “The Lord needs it.” They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

Say: Jesus is our king. He came into the world to save us. He is worthy of our praise.

How does Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem unique? What other ways is his kingdom's arrival different than expected?

The people laid their cloaks in the road to show he was worthy of honor and praise. How do you give God honor and praise?

It is hard to worhsip Jesus with every part of our lives. What parts of your life do you still need to give to the King (struggles, obsessions and idols)? Write them down on a piece of paper.

Play a worship song (smart phone, radio etc.), kneel and lay the piece of paper on the ground as you worship. Give these things to the king of kings?
